The Friendship Games are cultural and sporting exchange program between Western Australia and Shanghai, China. The 2016 Friendship Games Tour will be held in Shanghai, China from 5-15 July 2016 (WA’s July school holidays). Four sports will be included in the 2016 Games including Athletics, Basketball, Soccer, and Swimming.
The athletics competition is open to male and female athletes aged 15, 16 and 17 years (born 1999, 2000, or 2001). Note: Age as at 31 December 2016.
Track Events: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 90/100/110m Hurdles*, 200/400m Hurdles*, and 2000m Steeple Chase.
Field Events: High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin
It is expected that athletes will compete in multiple events on the Friendship Games Tour, which will include two athletics competitions plus a number of cultural experiences.
Participant Fee: $2,500.00. This participant fee includes return international flights from Perth to Shanghai, accommodation, all meals, ground transport, insurance, coaching, competition fees, and cultural experiences. This fee will need to be paid in full during the online registration process that will open at 9:00am on Friday 18 March 2016 and close at 5:00pm on Friday 8 April 2016.
Additional costs include: Australian Passport fees ($127 for 5 years / $254 for 10 years), Chinese Visa Fee (approx. $109.50), and spending money.
Selection Criteria and Nomination Process:
All athletes must complete the online Expression of Interest (EOI) by 5:00pm Monday 7 March 2016. Only athletes who have submitted an online EOI for the Friendship Games Tour will be eligible for selection. There is no fee associated with this EOI, but athletes and parents must be aware that the participant fee of $2,500 will be payable in full by 8 April 2016.
The first two available WA finishers at the 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships in the U16 (aged 15 years), U17 (aged 15 or 16 years), and U18 (aged 15, 16 or 17 years) age groups in the track and field events listed above and achieving the Friendship Games Qualifying Standards (see Appendix 1) will be eligible for selection in the WA Friendship Games Tour Team.
The maximum team size is 18 athletes.
If the number of athletes eligible for selection exceeds the team size limit of 18, athletes will be ranked on their performances in their first (best) event as well as their second and/or third events.
15 February 2016 Online Expressions of Interest (EOI) Open. Athletes must submit an EOI to be eligible for selection to the Friendship Games Tour Team.
7 March 2016 Online EOIs close.- EXTENDED to 5pm 14 March
8-13 March 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships (Selection Event).
15 March 2016 Selection Meeting.
18 March 2016 Eligible athletes notified of Friendship Games Tour Team selection.
18 March – 8 April 2016 Online registration and payment of $2,500 participant fee.
5 – 15 July 2016 Friendship Games Tour in Shanghai, China (will comprise two athletics competitions plus cultural experiences).
